Many people assume that headaches originate solely from problems within the head itself. However, a significant number of headaches actually begin in the neck. These are commonly referred to as Cervicogenic Headaches or Tension-Type Headaches associated with neck muscle dysfunction and cervical spine irritation.
The upper cervical nerves (C1-C3) share neurological connections with the trigeminal nerve system, which is responsible for sensation in the face and head. When the muscles, joints, or discs in the cervical spine become irritated or restricted, pain signals can be referred upward, resulting in headaches that may be felt around the back of the head, temples, forehead, or even behind the eyes.
What Does Research Show?
Research published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics has demonstrated that patients with cervicogenic headaches who received acupuncture experienced significantly greater reductions in headache frequency and pain intensity compared with those receiving sham acupuncture.
Additional clinical studies have shown that spinal manipulation and manual therapies can improve cervical mobility, reduce muscular tension, and address underlying biomechanical dysfunctions contributing to headache symptoms.
From a Traditional East Asian Medicine perspective, neck tension can disrupt the normal circulation of Qi and Blood through the meridians that travel to the head. Acupuncture aims to restore balance, improve circulation, relax tight muscles, and reduce pain naturally.
If you frequently experience headaches accompanied by neck stiffness, limited range of motion, or shoulder tension, addressing the underlying neck dysfunction may provide more lasting relief than relying solely on pain medication.
At Dr. Song Acupuncture Clinic, we utilize evidence-informed acupuncture, manual therapy, and individualized treatment plans to help patients manage neck pain and headache symptoms safely and effectively.
